1984 is a novel written by George Orwell in the 1940's, about a dystopian vision of a future society (set in 1984) under a totalitarianism so complete, that no other real life comparison comes close (at least we hope so), even the USSR which inspired the novel. Despite that we can see glimpses of 1984 - the absolute prerogative enjoyed by "the party" to control the actions, minds and even hearts of people for the sake of power, in the totalitarian entities of our times. Certainly in regimes like North Korea and China, but also in subtler ways within elements of our western democracies.
The battle line between good and evil runs through the heart of every man.
- Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn
For us in Russia communism is a dead dog. For many people in the West, it is still a living lion.
