Cancel culture has probably existed in one form or another for a while now, but it really became a force with the invention of social media. In giving a voice to the unwashed masses, it also enabled people without much in the way of personal accomplishments, but certainly possessing of opinions, to loudly and often anonymously project said opinions across the internet.
While the fear of cancel culture has had an effect on many of the institutions that govern our lives, its worst aspect is the modern day witch hunts that it has created. Whether an individual is accused of an actual crime, or merely the crime of having an opinion that differs from the woke one; the decision of the courts (which are also becoming woke), has taken a back seat to the opinion of the mob, which has shown itself to be shallow, ill-informed, fickle, and malicious.
